A story. A song. A solution.

Today I’m going to tell you a story about the magic of music.

Listening to a song stuck in your head can give you guidance, especially when you ask a friend for help!

The Backstory

Many years ago, I had a weekly radio spot as a call-in psychic on Kaya FM in Johannesburg.

The station was in downtown Joburg then. I used to wake up at 5 a.m. and catch a taxi to glide through the empty, quiet streets so I could arrive before the Breakfast Show began.

The Kaya Breakfast Show had a big popular following. Hosted by the hilarious, sparring duo of Pat Cash and Ed Jordan, alongside Steven Bacher for business and Jeff Moloi on sports, spirits ran high.

Did you notice that the line-up was all men?

Producer Lance Claasen discovered me on another station’s evening program. He invited me to move from Cape Town to Joburg to appear on Kaya as a regular gig.

Lance brought me in to attract more women listeners. Never one for flattery, Lance told me his plan worked: the show audience rose from 500,000 to 1 million in the first year I appeared. The new listeners were women. Lance credits the “feminine touch” of a call-in psychic show for the rise.

Our story today focuses on my colleague, sportscaster Jeff Moloi.

Even though the whole crew had to wake up before dawn (luckily I only came in once a week!) Jeff was always in the best of moods. He had more energy than five cups of coffee. I loved his laugh, and he always had a good word to say, about everybody.

He also possessed a terrific memory for names and details of South African history and politics. He was much more than a “last night’s football scores” kind of journalist.

After three years on the show, when I left my weekly spot on Kaya, Jeff and I kept in touch via social media. He later moved out of Joburg and taught broadcasting at Walter Sisulu University in Mthatha. His Facebook and Twitter posts still made me chuckle and think, just as he had in real life.

I took a tourist trip to the Wild Coast while back. I messaged Jeff to say I’d be flying through Mthatha.

We caught up over lunch. I asked him how teaching was going, and he said, “Really, I miss radio a lot.”

With his deep, rich voice, his ready chuckle, and his broad awareness of politics, music, and sports, Jeff was such a natural for radio, I immediately encouraged him to move back up to Joburg and find a station.

“They’ll be lucky to have you!” I said.

He nodded, but said he wasn’t sure he could make it work with his family life.

Fast-forward to this week.

Jeff had read my guided suggestion that you tune in to “the song stuck in your head,” to learn what your Guides are trying to tell you.

“I have a song stuck in my head!”

Jeff emailed me urgently. He had a big earworm. It was the 1990 tune, “Put the Message in the Box” by World Party.

Here’s the YouTube video; it’s so catchy, no wonder it became Jeff’s earworm!

The lyrics Jeff heard repeatedly are in the chorus:

Put the message in the box
Put the box into the car
Drive the car around the world
Until you get heard

He emailed me: “Shan, what do you think this means?”

My immediate reaction:

“Jeff, you need to get back on the radio.

Your voice is the message.

The box is the radio.

The radio is in the car, and your message is going out around the world!”

He responded enthusiastically:

“I did not even think about that (obvious) answer!!!

I’ve been thinking that I need to get out of what I’m doing for a while.

Thank you so much, it makes a lot of sense.

I’ll see what I can do about it.”

Why am I telling you this story today?

Our Guides will try many different avenues to reach us with Their divine messages.

  • A colleague might suggest a new path for you
  • A job opportunity could pop up
  • A new treatment, therapy, or healing modality could come your way
  • Sometimes, a song will get stuck in your head

However — and this is a big however — the power is in YOUR hands to take action on this guidance, or to postpone it.

If we take immediate action (highly recommended!) we get to discover what is meant for us.

If we don’t act, our Guides will keep trying, until that window of opportunity shuts.

Because Jeff is still hearing this message, it means he should still go back into the career that is perfect for him — radio.

So I say to Jeff, and to you: don’t lose hope. Keep trying. Keep listening. Do take action.

And if anyone on this email list is seeking a radio professional with high ethics and a great voice, look up Jeff Moloi on Facebook or especially Twitter @jeffersohn where he is particularly humorous.

Keep your ears open!
